The History of Black Diamonds

These deep, raven-hued gemstones are only found in the Central African Republic and Brazil in South America. There is surprisingly very little recorded history on black diamonds—or carbonados as they’re called—which only adds to their mystery. According to the GIA, there are very few famous black diamonds known. One of them is the Black Orloff, the 67.50 ct black diamond, also called the Eye of Brahman.

How Black Diamonds Get Their Color

While research on black diamonds is relatively recent, we now know that they get their color from large clouds or quantities of minute mineral inclusions, such as hematite, pyrite, or graphite, that extend throughout the gemstone.

Many of these diamonds’ fractures and cleavages may be stained black or may have become black over time due to graphitization. The coloration of these diamonds is a result of the concentrations of these internal features. Without them, the diamond’s actual color would be anywhere from colorless to olive green or even brown.

Generally speaking, diamonds are assessed using the 4 Cs—cut, carat, clarity, and color. However, considering the fact that black diamonds fall outside the color range, they are assessed using GIA’s color grading system for colored diamonds.
